A True Map Of The World

The map shown here is a terrain relief image of the world with the boundaries of major countries shown as white lines. Created by artist and architect hajime narukawa, the map looks pretty weird at first glance, with an orientation shift between asia and north america, but it's actually one of the most proportional maps we've got. Seen in rectangular form, antarctica is intact and at the bottom right.

The mercator map has a boundary cut error:

The result is a more accurate depiction of countries and landmasses. Australia is usually on the other side of the map in relation to america, so it's hard to see that we are close to being the same size. One makes a cut of 180 degrees along the meridian of the international date line from pole to pole and unrolls the earth’s surface, thus putting hawaii. Called the authagraph, the result is a map that looks a little different that most of us are used to.
